Founded in 1596 at the Mariko post town on the old Tokaido road, Chojiya has served tororo-jiru grated yam soup for over four centuries. Its thatched-roof building carries on the scene depicted in Hiroshige's ukiyo-e series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido.
